Division Calculator

Division is one of the four basic mathematical operations—alongside addition, subtraction, and multiplication. It is used to split a number into equal parts or groups.

It answers: “How many in each group?” or “How many groups?”
The symbol of division is ÷ or /.

Key Concepts

Dividend

The number being divided. Example: In 12 ÷ 3, 12 is the dividend.

Divisor

The number you divide by. Example: In 12 ÷ 3, 3 is the divisor.

Quotient

The result of division. 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Remainder

The value left over if division is not exact.

Examples of Division

  • 12 ÷ 3 = 4 (Equal sharing)
  • 30 ÷ 5 = 6 (Grouping students)
  • 10 ÷ 5 = 2 (Unit price calculation)

Types of Division

Partitive (Sharing)

Total and number of groups are known. Find items per group.

Quotative (Grouping)

Total and size of each group are known. Find number of groups.

Important Rules
  • ✔ n ÷ 1 = n
  • ✔ n ÷ n = 1 (where n ≠ 0)
  • ✔ 0 ÷ n = 0 (where n ≠ 0)
  • ✔ Division by 0 is undefined
  • ✔ If 4 × 3 = 12, then 12 ÷ 4 = 3
